First Lady Janet Museveni Commissions Community-Funded Grameen Hospital in Rubaga

he First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, on Friday commissioned the Henry K. Grameen Hospital in Suna Zone, Kabowa Parish, Rubaga Division. The facility, valued at sh400 million, was built entirely from savings contributed by members of the Grameen Women’s Development Initiative.

Construction of the hospital began in May 2023, supported by an initial sh100 million seed capital donation from Mrs. Museveni to boost household income. According to a statement from her office, the initiative has since grown to over 20,400 members, expanding its assets to more than sh4.2 billion, with women saving sh5,000 daily.

Mrs. Museveni said the completion of the hospital reflected the transformative power of unity, disciplined saving and women-led development. She encouraged the group to extend their work beyond Rubaga to other parts of Kampala and eventually nationwide.
